Deadline is September 16.

The Government of Canada is matching all donations by registered Canadian charities responding to the East Africa Drought until Sept 16. Only 9 days remaining! For each eligible dollar raised, the Government of Canada will set aside an equivalent dollar for the East Africa Drought Relief Fund, which will be administered separately by the Canadian International Development Agency.

Worldwide donations for international aid and relief organizations remain inadequate, as the food crisis continues to worsen.

are now experiencing famine. The UN also estimated that 750,000 people are at risk of starvation in the next four months. http://bit.ly/qf3047

On August 8th, 2011, seven Somali-Canadian cousins completed a 303km walk from Calgary to Edmonton in support of Somali drought victims. The walk, which took 62 hours to complete, aimed to raise $10,000 for Oxfam Canada's relief efforts in Somalia.

As of August 11th, the walk had raised over $25,000, all of which will be matched by the Government of Canada. The walk has also raised a tremendous amount of awareness regarding the famine and humanitarian crisis occurring in Somalia, and has inspired Albertans and Canadians from coast to coast to Step UP for Somalia.

Learn more about Step UP for Somalia here, and donate now.

On August 3rd, the United Nations classified three new areas of Somalia as having been hit by famine, bringing the total to five. The UN predicts that famine will spread to all of the southern regions of Somalia in coming weeks.

The famine, which has been caused by severe drought, skyrocketing food prices, and conflict, has killed tens of thousands, displaced hundreds of thousands, and is afflicting an estimated 12 million individuals throughout the Horn of Africa.

This humanitarian crisis requires both immediate relief aid and donations for medium- and long-term development in affected regions. The Canadian government will be matching funds for donations made by Canadians to eligible charities working in the region between July 6 and September 16.

Click here for information on the ACGC member organizations that are currently working in the Horn of Africa, and how you can get involved.
